CYcling in the city for sustainable urban mobility

The CYcling in the City event was initiated by the Dutch Embassy in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Works. The event was highly popular, engaging hundreds of citizens and government officials who cycled through the Old Town of Nicosia. This annual initiative highlights the importance of cycling as a healthy, efficient, and environmentally friendly means of transportation in urban environments. It also serves as an invitation to explore sustainable mobility solutions in Cyprus.

Objectives:

  • Promoting cycling in the city as a practical, eco-friendly alternative to car transportation, which will also help reduce traffic jams in the city.
  • Encouraging the development of safe cycling paths in the city.
  • Raising awareness about the health benefits of cycling.

Description of the Practice:

As part of the event, a 13-kilometer route was designated, passing through the historic parts of the city and connecting the districts of Aglantzia, Nicosia, and Strovolos. The length of the route allowed participation by residents of varying skill levels, including children and the elderly. The group was led by the Minister of Transport, and other government officials, local mayors, and members of the diplomatic corps, including the Dutch Ambassador, also participated. The event symbolized a united call for the improvement of urban cycling infrastructure. Participants demonstrated their commitment to a greener, more accessible city with lower CO2 emissions from cars.

Impact and Results:

CYcling in the City highlighted the potential of using bicycles as a primary means of transportation in the city. The initiative attracted the attention of a large part of the local community, members of the diplomatic corps, and the media. The involvement of local politicians created a platform for discussion and an opportunity to highlight the need for new, safe cycling paths and support for alternative modes of transport. This public bike ride increased the community’s enthusiasm for urban cycling and strengthened the sense of shared responsibility for reducing pollution and traffic congestion.

Challenges and Solutions:

One challenge for promoting urban cycling in Nicosia has been the lack of dedicated bike paths. To address this, the ministry with support from the House Committees on Environment and Transportation announced plans to expand bike lanes. By bringing attention to the need for safer cycling infrastructure, the event set a foundation for these improvements, showing how collaborative planning can overcome structural limitations.

Can it be repeated?:

The success of CYcling in the City 2023 highlights its potential to be repeated as an annual event, or even held more frequently. With minimal organizational costs and broad support from the community and government, this practice can serve as a model for similar urban cycling events in other cities in Cyprus and abroad, promoting sustainable transportation practices.

Conclusion:

The CYcling in the City 2023 serves as a model for encouraging urban cycling as a healthier, eco-friendly, and congestion-reducing alternative to car travel. Through high-level participation and public enthusiasm, the event demonstrated how communities and governments can collaboratively promote sustainable urban mobility.

Recommendations:

We recommend that such events include educational workshops on the following topics: cycling and mental and physical health, bike safety and maintenance, and traffic regulations. These workshops would encourage participants to cycle regularly and further strengthen cycling culture. Moreover, an increase in the number of bike paths and designated parking spaces for bicycles would enhance the impact of CYcling in the City, making urban cycling safer and more accessible. Regular events like this could maintain public interest and further embed cycling into the urban transportation network.
