5 km for the tortoises – raising awareness for endangered reptile conservation

Active Zone Outdoor members participated in the 7th Radisson Blu Larnaka International Marathon in 2024 under the banner “Running for the Tortoises” to raise awareness about the conservation of endangered tortoises and other reptile species across the globe. This unique initiative seeks to engage the running community and spectators in discussions on reptile protection, focusing on habitat preservation and species survival.

Objectives:

  • Highlighting the critical situation of endangered species across the globe
  • Educating the public on the importance of biodiversity and the need to protect habitats
  • Inspiring individual and collective actions to safeguard endangered reptile populations
  • Encouraging participants to run regularly to improve physical and mental health

Description of the Practice:

Active Zone Outdoor has created a team of runners to promote the protection of endangered reptile species across the globe. Each participant wore specially designed shirts featuring a turtle symbol and slogans about nature conservation and the fundraising campaign for an organization dedicated to endangered reptiles. In addition to the marathon, AZO conducted a campaign to raise awareness about endangered reptile species and actions people can take to help protect these animals. As part of this initiative, AZO collaborated with local environmental organizations to provide resources and engage participants in interactive workshops and initiatives focused on reptile biodiversity in Cyprus.

Impact and Results:

AZO engaged dozens of runners who expressed interest in participating in the race and promoting the protection of endangered species. By combining a significant event like the Larnaca Marathon with a conservation message, AZO raised public interest in protecting turtles. Awareness-raising activities during sports events effectively engage the community and encourage discussions about nature conservation. The pre-event social media campaign broadened the reach, generating additional support for habitat protection.

Challenges and Solutions:

One challenge has been ensuring that the conservation message reaches a diverse audience beyond environmentally conscious participants. AZO addressed this by using clear, engaging visuals and materials suitable for all ages. Additionally, the team worked with media outlets to help spread the message to a broader public and included interactive elements like social media challenges to engage people unfamiliar with conservation topics.

Can it be repeated?

This project of raising awareness at a public sports event is highly replicable and can be applied to marathons or other events in various locations. With running events being organized more frequently and gaining popularity, there is an opportunity to encourage physical activity while educating about environmental conservation. This dual approach provides a platform to inspire action on both fronts: promoting health through exercise and fostering environmental awareness.

Conclusion:

AZO’s participation in the Larnaca Marathon under “Running for the Tortoises” demonstrates how sports events can serve as a platform for meaningful conservation advocacy. By engaging the community through accessible, memorable messaging, AZO is fostering a deeper understanding of reptile conservation and the importance of biodiversity.

Recommendations:

Future events could expand awareness by involving local schools or nature clubs in pre-event activities, such as educational workshops or field trips focused on native species. Collaborating with conservation experts for short talks at the marathon and distributing eco-friendly merchandise, like reusable water bottles featuring tortoise imagery, could further increase support for tortoise and reptile conservation efforts.
